Day Four: A Lesson in Humility, When the Great become Small

And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day (Genesis 1 14-18)

Day Four: A Lesson in Humility, When the Great become Small

Day four is the story of the sun the moon and the stars. Stars are suns as most of us know, and the moon does not have its own source of light but is simply a reflection of the sun. The scriptures tell all of us that we should “not think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.” Romans 12:3. The sun the moon and the stars are all great in their own right but each is in small and humble before a creator God. Men have often worshipped the created thing and instead of the creator God. The sun the moon and the stars have been the subject of more idolatry than any other created things.

Though the sun is a vast fire it is only one of many stars and not the greatest of those. The other stars we see at night are great and expansive but they are but a twinkle in the night sky. A full moon is a grand sight but it is simply a refection of the suns rays.

There are lessons for us in each of these celestial bodies. We are called to be like the sun. “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16. When we let our light shine, we bring warmth to cold hearts, and light to darkened souls. We can be the source of a new morning to those who need a fresh start.

Like the moon we should be the reflection of the Light that comes from the Lord and remember that we are not our own source. 1 John 1: expresses this so clearly, “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one”

The stars teach us about fellowship. They join together in a predictable pattern communicating order, providing a map to those who may become lost at sea. Their message requires decrement. A novice should not be depended on to provide the read and direct the ship by them. Applying this truth to life and the church “Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11:13.
By metaphor Jesus the man, becomes the sun that is the light of the world, his called leaders are the moon reflecting His glory, and the communion of saints are lights to a dark world, providing direction, order and hope in a world that seems confused and chaotic.

Hebrews 1 tells us that God has “spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” On day four he spoke the sun the moon and the stars into being, if you are lost for words, just look up, the light shines brightly day and night through the work that God did on day four.
